May 4 A New Hope: “May the 4th” Be With You: Auction to Support the Skagit River Poetry Foundation
The Skagit River Poetry Foundation, a local nonprofit, invites the community to a galaxy far, far away and presents an evening fit for a Jedi at their Annual Auction, A New Hope: May the 4th (Force) Be With You on Saturday May 4th from 5:00pm to 9:00pm at Hillcrest Park Lodge in Mount Vernon. This Star Wars themed extravaganza will appeal to young and old alike as they take a trip through the Foundation’s history and share their mission of supporting literacy through poetry. The featured event will be the live and silent auction where guests can bid on a variety of items, packages, and experiences. This other worldly event will include a delicious Dark Side Dessert Dash, Raise-Your-Lightsaber for Kids, “Be the New Hope” Photo Booth with costumes and props, and games to test your Star Wars trivia knowledge. Hearty appetizers by Simply Sound Catering from Josh Van Hine and themed drinks at thier Mos Eisley bar. Since 1998, the Skagit River Poetry Foundation has trained area teachers using professional poets to help build literacy skills in our classrooms. The SRPF brings poetic voices to rural and urban communities that reflect diverse multi-ethnic and multi-generational populations, viewpoints, and history. When you support the Skagit River Poetry Foundation you support student learning and community enrichment as they collaborate with poets from around the nation to bring poetry into the classroom every school year and into our community as they host the Skagit River Poetry Festival, which is held every other year in La Conner, WA. Join the festivities on May 4th (Star Wars Day) so they may continue their Jedi mission. Costumes optional, but if guests attend in a Star Wars inspired costume they'll be entered into a drawing to win a prize! May the Force of Poetry Be With You.

May 11 Don't forget to look up!: Fantastic fungi and where to find them with Dr. Korena Mafune
In soils, fungal diversity is vast and despite being a foundation for all life on land, many of these organisms remain under-explored or sometimes even ignored. During this presentation, Dr. Korena Mafune will take you on a fungi-filled educational journey to learn about the importance of these organisms, their role in ecosystem health, and how they may play a crucial role high up in the tree canopies in Washington's old-growth temperate rainforests.

May 17 - May 19 La Conner Guitar Festival 2024
There is a small but thriving, tight-knit community of guitar builders across the globe.  These are artisans who are committed to building the finest instruments.  Attention to every detail in tone and finish is an obsession for these luthiers.  It’s a labor of love for them.  They truly are artists in every sense of the word.  There are a handful of festivals for them across the country, these festivals are your opportunity to meet the luthiers, play the guitars, and find your perfect guitar. Until you’ve played these instruments you really won’t appreciate the difference an incredibly well crafted musical instrument can make to your playing, and your enjoyment of playing. It’s like falling in love.  For musicians there is an emotional connection to their instrument, with a handmade guitar the connection extends to its maker!
You won’t find these instruments in most music stores, they are one of a kind, they are works of art.  These luthiers most often work directly with their clients to build an instrument for them. It’s a process that takes months, sometimes even years to complete.  But these luthiers also make instruments just for these shows, beautiful instruments that highlight their skills.  Come to La Conner.  It’s your opportunity to find the instrument of your dreams.
