Jul 2 - Sep 7 MoNA's 35th Anniversary Exhibit: MoNA at 35
As the 35th Anniversary exhibit, Mona at 35 seeks to explore the trajectory of art in the Northwest, both regionally and locally, by including artists included in the “Northwest School” and those working at the same time but not included in the traditional group. The exhibition features several large-scale works new to the permanent collection, including the William Cumming mural discovered at the Skagit County Fair two summers ago, which had been stored for decades in a local barn. The mural will be shown in its current state, as we start the fundraising process for its conservation. A section of the exhibition will also focus on Skagit County artists working in two and three dimensions, exploring flora, fauna, life, and land. The central theme of the exhibit is the different types of journeys that individuals, artworks, and institutions can embark on, whether it is physical movement, the evolution of a museum, or an adventure through different points of view. Artists include Guy Anderson, Charles Laurens “Larry” Heald, Helmi Juvonen, Neil Meitzler, Viola Patterson, and Barbara Straker James.

The William Cumming mural is a major addition to the permanent collection: a time capsule lost for decades, the painting represents an important chapter in the history of Northwest art. The mural allows us to relate the history of the Depression-era New Deal programs that supported artists all over the country, and to show how it impacted artists in our own region. The Cumming mural is one of four surviving large-scale paintings in Skagit County that document early-twentieth-century industry of the Northwest, and provides a connection to our past that also shows the continuity of livelihoods from 75 years ago to the present day. At MoNA, we tell the whole story of Northwest art, from its beginnings to the emerging artists of today and tomorrow, including the social, cultural, historical, and environmental contexts that contribute to the vast spectrum of art made in this region. The Cumming mural is a significant contribution to our local art history with regional and national implications, and we are honored to be stewards of its care.

Aug 4 Shakespeare NW Presents - Cymbeline
Cymbeline, King of Britain has banished his daughter's lowly husband, and set up his oafish stepson as her suitor. With invasion looming from Augustus Caesar, will the poor exile be deceived about his wife's fidelity by a crafty Italian? Will the past come back to haunt us, or help us? Will loved ones ever be reunited? This comedic, tragic, historical, pastoral romance has almost every trick and trope you can hope for in a Shakespeare play, except horse-riding sounds with coconuts. "Was this bizarre British comedy an inspiration for Monty Python?"

Aug 5 Shakespeare NW Presents - Merchant of Vegas
Probably the play that best epitomizes a line from another of Shakespeare's plays "Neither a borrow nor a lender be..." the Merchant of Venice is a cautionary comedy about gambling on love. When Bassanio has to borrow money from a friend (who has to borrow that same money from a loan shark) just so he can take a gamble for the fair Portia's hand in marriage, a whole house of cards comes tumbling down. Will the creditors be merciful? And yes, since the metaphor of gambling on love is so prevalent, where else would we set our scene but the gambling halls of Vegas? Come try your luck, just remember: what happens in Venice, stays in Venice.

Aug 13 Meet the Artist: Steve Jensen at MoNA
Meet the Artist: Steve Jensen
Tickets: $10, free for members

Join us in the gallery on August 13, for a tour of Voyager with artist Steve Jensen.

Voyager: A Series by Steve Jensen, emerged after the death of Jensen’s best friend, who had requested that Jensen carve a boat for his ashes. Over the next eight years, Jensen created boats for the ashes of his parents and his partner, John. The Voyager series grew out of his need to grieve these devastating losses, and the image of a boat seemed fitting as a symbol for the move to the “other side”, as it has been used for centuries in many different cultures. The use of glass in Jensen’s sculptures gives the boats an ethereal quality, but they are also organic because of his frequent use of materials found on Washington beaches and discarded boat parts. Art is often used as a way to communicate complex and difficult issues that are difficult to express in language, and Jensen hopes that this series will help viewers find peace and relief after being told his story through this exhibit.

Aug 18 The Blackberry Bushes Stringband at The Conway Muse
The Blackberry Bushes are a Northwest Alt-Folk Stringband. The Bushes innovative acoustic sound draws from the deep roots of American traditional music to create a rich patchwork that shares threads with artists like Gillian Welch and David Rawlings, Sean Hayes, and Crooked Still. Joyful singing and songwriting are supported by carefully constructed soundscapes that feature virtuosic fiddle. A longtime Northwest favorite, the band has developed into a national act, with recent tours across the US and Europe. Their live show is joyous and vibrant with an intention to move the audience in their hearts and out of their seats. "Their blend of traditional Bluegrass and Folk elements with more contemporary sounds has an appeal not seen since Nickel Creek or The Be Good Tanyas." (Joseph Kyle; The Big Takeover) $7 cover.

Aug 20 CC Adams Band at The Conway Muse
CC Adams Band - The CC Adams Band featuring Mary Ellen Lykins performs with passion and Mary Ellen is the icing on the cake. There's no mistaking the voice. Mary Ellen Lykins is a powerhouse best typified as the power of Etta James with a bit of Janis Joplin grit thrown in. The bands roots are in the Blues with a funky bit of R&B and a dash of tasty rock mixed in for flavor. Thwarting the conventional, the band thrives on unique arrangements. The CC Adams Band were Semi finalists in the NW International Blues Competition 2014. Janice Cleven Gage, Music Director Washington Blues Society: ?The C C Adams Band makes it impossible to stay in your seat...unless you're mesmerized by the incredible vocals of Mary Ellen Lykins. One of my favorite bands!" Craig Coyote Adams  Guitar & Vocals Mary Ellen Lykins - Lead Vocals Mark Edick - Drums & Vocals Kevin Summers - Sax & Vocals Neil Sorensen - Bass & Vocals
