Jul 1 Petunia & The Vipers (Most Popular Canadian Band) at The Conway Muse
Petunia & The Vipers - With a piercing gaze, Petunia looks into the collective soul of the audience, then launches into some high and lonesome vocals that conjure up the ghost of Jimmie Rodgers. Not content with mesmerizing the crowd, Petunia's tapping boot propels the band into a snarling fire and brimstone rave-up as a wave of frantic jitterbuggers compete for space on the hardwood dance floor. He loves to keep you guessing.. often throwing a Spanish Ballad or Chanson a la Edith Piaf into the set. I believe it's the spirit of adventure that attracted the high calibre musicians that make up The Vipers. Jimmy, Stephen, Marc, James, Patrick and Sam have decades of experience working their magic with some of the most exciting names on the country and rockabilly circuits. Petunia & The Vipers thrive on the challenge of adding Latin rhythms to a country blues tune, or gypsy flavouring to a rockabilly standard. Petunia defies convention and yet there is some conservancy to his music. His honest, cut to the heart songwriting and multi-syllabic narratives would leave a lesser singer tongue-tied and breathless. I know, I've tried it. One of the many themes running through Petunia's lyrics relates to living life on one's own terms  fearlessly and without regret.

Jul 2 - Sep 7 MoNA's 35th Anniversary Exhibit: MoNA at 35
As the 35th Anniversary exhibit, Mona at 35 seeks to explore the trajectory of art in the Northwest, both regionally and locally, by including artists included in the “Northwest School” and those working at the same time but not included in the traditional group. The exhibition features several large-scale works new to the permanent collection, including the William Cumming mural discovered at the Skagit County Fair two summers ago, which had been stored for decades in a local barn. The mural will be shown in its current state, as we start the fundraising process for its conservation. A section of the exhibition will also focus on Skagit County artists working in two and three dimensions, exploring flora, fauna, life, and land. The central theme of the exhibit is the different types of journeys that individuals, artworks, and institutions can embark on, whether it is physical movement, the evolution of a museum, or an adventure through different points of view. Artists include Guy Anderson, Charles Laurens “Larry” Heald, Helmi Juvonen, Neil Meitzler, Viola Patterson, and Barbara Straker James.

The William Cumming mural is a major addition to the permanent collection: a time capsule lost for decades, the painting represents an important chapter in the history of Northwest art. The mural allows us to relate the history of the Depression-era New Deal programs that supported artists all over the country, and to show how it impacted artists in our own region. The Cumming mural is one of four surviving large-scale paintings in Skagit County that document early-twentieth-century industry of the Northwest, and provides a connection to our past that also shows the continuity of livelihoods from 75 years ago to the present day. At MoNA, we tell the whole story of Northwest art, from its beginnings to the emerging artists of today and tomorrow, including the social, cultural, historical, and environmental contexts that contribute to the vast spectrum of art made in this region. The Cumming mural is a significant contribution to our local art history with regional and national implications, and we are honored to be stewards of its care.

Jul 8 Shakespeare NW Presents - Cymbeline
Cymbeline, King of Britain has banished his daughter's lowly husband, and set up his oafish stepson as her suitor. With invasion looming from Augustus Caesar, will the poor exile be deceived about his wife's fidelity by a crafty Italian? Will the past come back to haunt us, or help us? Will loved ones ever be reunited? This comedic, tragic, historical, pastoral romance has almost every trick and trope you can hope for in a Shakespeare play, except horse-riding sounds with coconuts. "Was this bizarre British comedy an inspiration for Monty Python?"

Jul 8 Cee Cee James & Rob "Slideboy" Andrews at The Conway Muse
Take a lifetime of heartache and loss starting at birth and gift it with a lyric writing style that is filled with an honesty so vulnerable that it catches the most hardened heart off guard, knocking that back with a shot of WHISKEY DRENCHED VOCALS and a sweat dripping, take no prisoners performance, and you have one hell of a Blues Woman. Cee Cee James is one of those performers who comes across with more fire and fever when experienced live than is able to be captured on a recording. Stevie Ray Vaughan was often described the same way. She has a blistering voice that reaches for every ounce of emotion, sweat and raw power that she can muster. Cee Cee James is old-school blues...a steamy, sexy delivery of smokey back room stories spread over a bed of greasy slide guitar and pumping rhythms. She oozes blues.

Jul 9 Shakespeare NW Presents - Merchant of Vegas
Probably the play that best epitomizes a line from another of Shakespeare's plays "Neither a borrow nor a lender be..." the Merchant of Venice is a cautionary comedy about gambling on love. When Bassanio has to borrow money from a friend (who has to borrow that same money from a loan shark) just so he can take a gamble for the fair Portia's hand in marriage, a whole house of cards comes tumbling down. Will the creditors be merciful? And yes, since the metaphor of gambling on love is so prevalent, where else would we set our scene but the gambling halls of Vegas? Come try your luck, just remember: what happens in Venice, stays in Venice.

Jul 22 "Crazy Like A Fox" at The Conway Muse
Mia Starner is an engaging artist with a refreshing voice suited for the jazz and blues pieces she loves to sing. She can often be seen performing these styles with her husband Ben, although she's not limited to these genres. Mia's relationship with music was started early with all members of her family playing and singing as well as her father being a singer, multi-instrumentalist, musical instructor and songwriter. Mia also plays piano and clarinet and has a wide interest in all kinds of music. It was music that originally brought Mia and Ben together as a couple. Come and listen to their enthusiastic interpretations of the classics! Ben Starner is a piano master and his interpretations unique and intriguing. His finger technique is mesmerizing and his ability to interpret old classics with endless variety of phrasing astonishing. Come on in, enjoy dinner and drinks and experience this Skagit County musical phenom for yourself! Ben Starner is a Skagit County native born and raised. Ben has always loved music and has been playing the piano since the age of 12. Ben?s love of music and excellent ear affords him the ability to enjoy and perform multiple genres, not forsaking his first loves (jazz and ragtime) but in the true spirit of these styles, adds to the richness of his musical artistry.

Jul 23 From the Ground Up: The Creation of a Japanese-Inspired Garden
Creating a garden with a Japanese touch involves much more than just placing statues and lanterns into an existing garden. Using the example of a complete garden make-over, Hans Wressnigg from Niwa Japanese-Inspired Landscapes will explain the stages from inception and realization, demonstrating how a Japanese-inspired garden arises; considering the site potentials and limitations, as well as influences of specific situations on the design and responses in the Japanese-gardening tradition.

Jul 23 Shakespeare NW Presents - Cymbeline
Cymbeline, King of Britain has banished his daughter's lowly husband, and set up his oafish stepson as her suitor. With invasion looming from Augustus Caesar, will the poor exile be deceived about his wife's fidelity by a crafty Italian? Will the past come back to haunt us, or help us? Will loved ones ever be reunited? This comedic, tragic, historical, pastoral romance has almost every trick and trope you can hope for in a Shakespeare play, except horse-riding sounds with coconuts. "Was this bizarre British comedy an inspiration for Monty Python?"

Jul 24 Shakespeare NW Presents - Merchant of Vegas

Jul 28 Matthew Frantz at The Conway Muse
Matthew Frantz- is a maverick in the music world. Not easily pigeonholed, his music is soulful, honest, gritty and relevant to what's going on in the world now. A few short years ago, Matthew released his album, Odessa Days on Ghost Note Records. The album features a broad spectrum of songs, from the melancholy Silver Dollar Stream and Docks to the driving and dark, London Honey Bee and the emotive Epic Of Harvey Dylan. -TO LISTEN: http://matthewfrantz.bandcamp.com/ MEDIA "After four years of building his repertoire of songs and getting comfortable in his new genre, Frantz is ready" - Chip Chandler -Amarillo Globe "Matthew Frantz's voice sells itself. You hear him and think, man, this guy's the real deal." - Kyle Dayne - The Art Of Celebration "Although his online bio spews dubious tales of mastodon resurrections and a guitar that killed Hitler, Matthew Frantz is a genuine singer-songwriter who saturates each verse in emotion. Far from weepy though, the Chicago-based... artist got his start with fret-sliding grooves and quiet, breathy moments... swaps those sweet acoustics for a more defiant take on electric folk rock, complete with echo-laden psychedelic strums." - Kat McReynolds - Mountain Express Asheville
