You all have heard about the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival right? While the tulips are our most famous blooms, there’s nothing quite as wonderful as entire fields of bright, cheery daffodils against our Mt. Baker backdrop. It’s just so beautiful in March with the Daffodils blooming and there are so many fun events and exhibits in La Conner during March.  If you can’t make it to Skagit Valley Tulip Festival in April, skip the crowds and join us in March this year for the La Conner Daffodil Festival 2016!

Beyond Aztlán: Mexican & Chicana/o Artists in the Pacific Northwest
March 26- June 12, 2016

Spanning the last six decades, this exhibition assembles works by Chicana/o and Mexican artists that currently reside or formerly resided in the Northwest. Covering a wide spectrum of media—collage, drawing, painting, photography, and sculpture—the 15 artists included epitomize the diversity of our community.

Robert Flynn: Art from the Permanent Collection is a celebration of the prolific career of this 

Pacific Northwest artist. Born in 1930, Flynn worked in the Seattle area for 17 years and then another 40 

years on the island of Kauai, where he still creates art today. A sculptor, painter, and printmaker, he is 

self-trained and taught art at both a junior college and at a night school. Originally employed as a sign 

painter with a pictorial style, Flynn decided to leave this profession in order to devote more time to his 

art, all with the tremendous support of his wife, Sharon. 

In letter to the curator for the exhibit, Flynn recounts how he “was blown away seeing Jackson 

Pollock’s work at Seattle Art Museum” sometime in the 1950s. He lists many international modern and 

contemporary artists and writers as inspiration for his work, but places a heavy emphasis on Pollock and 

the romantic and tonal painter Albert Pinkham Ryder. This exhibit will both sculpture and paintings, 

many of which are abstract. The viewer will be able to observe both the thick paint strokes of Ryder, 

drops reminiscent of Pollock, and many other Modern art techniques and styles that Flynn made his 

own throughout his career.

For a ninth season, during the Tulip Festival, we will host an outstanding show of local artists from the Stanwood Camano Arts Guild located in our historic 1888 Schoolhouse. New and returning artists will display a multimedia celebration of styles including, outdoor stained glass garden art, paintings, jewelry, cards, photography, fiber arts and more. A must-see stop while touring the picturesque daffodil and tulip fields of the Skagit Valley. Free to the public and free parking.

WEARABLE SCULPTURE
Instructor: Paul Kuniholm Pauper

Make a wearable sculpture using a metal armature, stretchable fabric and hot glue. Soft sculpture concepts of contour, texture, color and form will be introduced, with individual instruction provided to help you create your own original art.

The Anacortes Arts Festival 3rd annual Art in Bloom offers an exciting range of events at the Depot Art Center in Anacortes April 15 - 23. A Juried Exhibition featuring 30 regional fine artists opens April 15 (free) from 6-9:00PM, April 16, daily from 11-4:00PM. Exhibit includes painting, photography, sculpture, glass, wood and mixed media work.

Join us on Earth Day for a FREE film screening of the Samish Tribe?s documentary, ?Maiden of Deception Pass: Guardian of Her Samish People.? This film tells the story of Ko-kwahl-alwoot who risked her life to save the Samish people from starvation, and illustrates the importance of tribal history to future generations. Skagit Fisheries Enhancement Group (SFEG), in partnership with Northwest Straits Initiative, Skagit Marine Resources Committee, Deception Pass Park Foundation, and the Samish Tribe, will host a volunteer planting party for Earth Day 2016. Activities will include planting native trees and shrubs, education about Pacific Northwest native plants, shoreline health, and marine life, fun raffle prizes, and a free picnic for the whole family. The 5k Do the Bloom Color Run takes place on Saturday, April 23 starting at 10 am. Runners of all ages will be liberally dusted with colorful powder throughout the run. Sign up through Active.com. Art in Bloom activities fund arts education in Anacortes schools and public art projects.
