Jan 9 - Mar 17 MoNA: Appassionata: The Art of Jacqueline Barnett 1990-2015
Often used as a musical term, appassionata refers to an intensely impassioned period or person. Appassionata: The Art of Jacqueline Barnett 1990-2015, an exhibit curated by well-known Seattle gallery owner Francine Seders, contains dynamic artworks that evoke both joy and pain. Seders chose oil paintings because they “reflect an intense emotional state of mind (while) their composition and play of colors give them strength and stability.” In contrast, Seders states, “the monotypes are more subdued, quieter; they are often painted over which gives them a luminous look.” Barnett uses bold colors, balanced compositions, and fluid brushstrokes to reflect emotions that all individuals experience

Jan 9 - Mar 17 MoNA: April Surgent: Observations of Life on Ice
The Museum of Northwest Art is pleased to present the cameo glass engravings of artist April Surgent. After layering different colors of glass, she slowly engraves the glass to reveal the color underneath. The series exhibited at MoNA is the product of Surgent’s eight-week study at the Palmer Station in Antarctica. Her artworks comment not only on the beauty and harsh landscapes of the area but also portray a deeper and personal meaning. The images are both meditative and abandoned, but they can also teach the viewer important lessons about how we can connect to others and the world around us. In addition, Surgent’s engraving process forces the artist to focus and move very slowly, which is a rarity in fast paced society. In April’s words, “As the pace of life speeds up and as we become witness to major changes in the geological timescale, I believe it especially important to record and document life through visual art so as to be learned from and not forgotten in the rush of the 21st century.”

Jan 9 - Mar 17 MoNA: Here and There: Topographic Conversation with Morris Graves
Here and There engages viewers in a discussion between Morris Graves, eight contemporary artists, and their environments. In addition to works by these eight artists, the exhibit features two pieces created by Graves while he was living in both Skagit and Humboldt Counties. Included with the artworks will be several photos of Graves taken by Imogen Cunningham and Mary Randlett.

Artists include Lanny Bergner, Imogen Cunningham, Ann Chadwick Reid, Eve Deisher, Lori Goodman, Morris Graves, Leslie Kenneth Price, Julie McNiel, Allen Moe, Mary Randlett, and Emily Silver.

Feb 19 Petunia & The Vipers (Most Popular Canadian Band)- Dance!
Petunia & The Vipers - With a piercing gaze, Petunia looks into the collective soul of the audience, then launches into some high and lonesome vocals that conjure up the ghost of Jimmie Rodgers. Not content with mesmerizing the crowd, Petunia?s tapping boot propels the band into a snarling fire and brimstone rave-up as a wave of frantic jitterbuggers compete for space on the hardwood dance floor. He loves to keep you guessing.. often throwing a Spanish Ballad or Chanson a la Edith Piaf into the set. I believe it?s the spirit of adventure that attracted the high calibre musicians that make up The Vipers. Jimmy, Stephen, Marc, James, Patrick and Sam have decades of experience working their magic with some of the most exciting names on the country and rockabilly circuits. Petunia & The Vipers thrive on the challenge of adding Latin rhythms to a country blues tune, or gypsy flavouring to a rockabilly standard. Petunia defies convention and yet there is some conservancy to his music. His honest, cut to the heart songwriting and multi-syllabic narratives would leave a lesser singer tongue-tied and breathless. I know, I?ve tried it. One of the many themes running through Petunia?s lyrics relates to living life on one?s own terms ? fearlessly and without regret. For tickets: http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/2494737
