“Quilting is two-dimensional medium, but I like to play with the illusion of three.  My quilts have a sense of depth that goes beyond the surface.  Elements seem to float above the surface or recede into the depths of the quilt.”  Artist, Colleen Wise

Oct 10 - Jan 3 MONA: Not Vanishing: Contemporary Expressions in Indigenous Art, 1977-2015
This Autumn MoNA presents, Not Vanishing: Contemporary Native American Art, 1977-2015, throughout all eight of the museum’s galleries. This exhibition, curated by Gail Tremblay and Miles R. Miller, examines the evolution of the Contemporary Native American Arts Movement and the works of artists living in the Northwest, with significant emphasis on the Puget Sound and Plateau regions.

The exhibition features more than 40 artists from tribes throughout the region, including established artists who have shaped the movement for years along with emerging artists who are keeping the movement alive.

Together the objects and installations in the museum’s galleries reveal the complexity of what it means to be an Indigenous artist today. This group of artists combines knowledge of Indigenous culture and aesthetics with an understanding of the postcolonial history of North America and its effect on Indigenous peoples.

Oct 22 - Dec 31 Grand Coulee to Grunge: Eight Stories that Changed the World
In Washington we built “the biggest thing on earth.” We ended a world war. We introduced air travel and helped put man on the moon. The fruits of our labor appear on dinner tables around the globe. Even Northwest grunge became iconic worldwide. Through the ages, big dreams and big risks tell the Washington story. This exhibit, on loan from the Secretary of State’s office, helps to tell Washington’s personal and unique story by focusing on eight key stories that helped put Washington on the map globally

Nov 7 North Cascades Institute - Salmon on the Nooksack
Each year, Northwest rivers teem with life and death as salmon return to their home waters to complete their life journey. As Puget Sound?s northernmost and fourth-largest watershed, the Nooksack River Basin is home to salmonid species both thriving and struggling. Join us as we step into waders and slip into the cool waters of the Nooksack River to explore its salmon-rich waters with aquatic biologist Brady Green. Together we will keep our eyes peeled for salmon and their redds as we learn about the fish species that call this watershed home. Brady will describe the unique characteristics of the forks of the Nooksack River, the salmon?s interconnectedness to dynamic natural systems and how impacts to the greater and local landscape have altered the fish?s status. Boots and waders will be available to borrow if you don't have them.

Nov 14 - Nov 15 Stumpwork Embroidery
For a brief time in the 17th century, there flourished a fantastic and charming form of embroidery that still inspires textile artists today – stumpwork, or raised embroidery.  This style of work is characterized by heavily stitched surfaces with three-dimensional elements that were fashioned into useful household items such as boxes and mirror frames.  This course is a wonderful opportunity to learn about using stumpwork in contemporary creations.

Nov 27 - Nov 28 Blind Tasting Competition @ Hellams Vineyard Wine Shop @ Wine Bar
Our annual two-day Blind Tasting Competition in years past has pitted Washington vs. California, but this year since we'll be focusing on Pinot Noir we're getting Oregon involved in the title fight!  Known for Pinot Noir, Oregon will be a tough match but we'll see what Washington & California can come up with in the late rounds... two wines from each state will be featured, you taste and judge (and guess the state!) and we'll tally up the results!  Cost is $5 for club members; $10 non-club.  A wonderful event after Thanksgiving, the tasting begins at 1 p.m. on Friday and concludes Saturday at 6 p.m.  Bring the relatives on down for a really festive wine tasting format!
