It's the end of February and the tulips are still weeks away. How about a change of pace? Pack up the family and head north to the Smelt Festival in La Conner.
If you start your trip early you can have breakfast, served by the Rotarians, from 8-10 a.m. at Maple Hall. Then comes the Skagit Symphony's 5K or 10K Smelt Run or for a low-key option, try the family fun walk around town.
The 45th annual Smelt Derby is held on the town docks from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. with prizes awarded in several categories.
There are hot-dog options for lunch, a raffle and plenty of kids' activities during the day, as well as tours of the historic schooner Rejoice, given by the local Sea Scouts.
